Where you'll sleep

Property Description

This sunny, fully furnished studio apartment in our "house with Southern charm" is especially set up medical professionals on short-term assignments and visiting scholars. ("Studio" means the bedroom and kitchen are combined in one room.) All utilities are included in the rent of $1,090. We accept credit cards for rent and fees via Stripe.com. (If you are using a credit card, we pass along Stripe's 2.9% fee.)

Minimum rental term is 30 days, then month-to-month. Sorry, no pets. Security deposit = $200. One-time cleaning fee = $120.

CLOSE TO EVERYTHING
You can walk to so many places from 2041 Englewood. Walk or bike to the Duke campus, to large grocery stores and to the Ninth Street shopping area -- the "Greenwich Village" of Durham, according to the Herald-Sun newspaper. We are 2.1 km (1.3 miles) from Duke Hospital North; 2.6 km (1.6 miles) from the Duke Chapel.

Walk to the Duke Gardens and to the Nasher Museum of Art. Stroll down to the Ellerbe Creek Trail. If you're feeling ambitious, walk down Main St. to the heart of downtown and take in all the history along that route.

Although we encourage walking, most of our tenants like to take the free Duke H1 bus from a stop four blocks away on Hillsborough Rd., direct to the Duke Medical Center campus. From there, it's a short walk to the West Campus Main Quad. In the evenings, Duke students, faculty and employees (including visiting nurses and other visiting professionals) can take the H1 bus home again or can get a ride home with the university's free van service, available every evening except Sunday. For more information, go to Parking.Duke.Edu > buses and vans.

An underused but valuable service is the free GoDurham city bus system (free until June 2024). The Route 11 bus also picks up four blocks away, also on Hillsborough Rd.

FOOD!
We're in the middle of a food cornucopia! A huge Harris Teeter supermarket is 0.9 km (0.6 miles) away, open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day. A little farther, on the other side of Ninth St., you'll find a Whole Foods market with lots of organic fruit and vegetables. We're within walking distance of 25 restaurants (including French, Indian, Peruvian, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mexican, North Carolina barbecue, Middle Eastern, pizza, and American comfort food) and nine coffee shops. Ask us about our favorites. Breakfast is served beginning at 7 a.m. at the popular Monuts, Elmos Diner, Common Market and Panera Bread -- all close by.

WHAT MAKES THIS APARTMENT UNUSUAL?
The apartment has some interesting features: You'll have your own private screened porch, which serves as the apartment's entryway and is a wonderful place to relax when the weather is mild. Ceiling fans in the screened porch and the bedroom/kitchen/study add a Southern ambiance. Hardwood floors throughout. You'll also have access to our back yard for yoga, meditation, exercise, reading or just sitting in the sun.

THOUGHTFULLY FURNISHED AND EQUIPPED
The apartment has about everything you could want -- comfortable bed, linens, pillows, pillowcases, comforters, towels, cookware, dishes, eating utensils, Chemex pour-over coffeemaker with free filters, microwave, toaster oven, hot water kettle, hair dryer, HD television, "compact kitchen," two refrigerators, two-person eating area, easy chair, desk with office chair, air purifier, vacuum cleaner and radio. An iron and ironing board are available on the back porch.

The "compact kitchen" features two electric burners, a small refrigerator and a sink with hot and cold water. In the hallway, you'll find a larger, apartment-size refrigerator with freezer, and a wardrobe for your clothes (with room for your luggage on top). The apartment also has two closets and spacious storage cabinets over the front door. No matter how many books you have, you'll not be able to fill the two tall bookcases.

Take advantage of our high-speed wifi (a $100 value). When we say "high-speed," we really mean it. A typical speed in the apartment is 400 Mbps or faster. You'll have access to a "smart" LG washer and dryer on site. "Smart" means you can check your phone to see when your wash or drying cycle will be finished.

PARKING
Parking is on the street directly in front of the apartment -- 42 steps from your front door. If you work at Duke, you can park in the Medical Center's R1C lot in the 2100 block of Hillsborough Rd. (a 2-minute drive from the apartment) and take the Duke H1 bus. A monthly parking pass is $13. (If there's a waiting list for passes, the Duke parking office will offer other suggestions.)

MULTI-FACETED SECURITY
The apartment has a 2nd generation Ring security system, monitored around the clock. In addition to the usual door and window sensors, the security system includes glass breakage sensors and a panic button beside the bed. No cameras in the apartment. The on-street parking area is brightly illuminated all night by a street light.

Our attention to security doesn't mean our neighborhood is unsafe. On the contrary, we've felt safe here for more than 40 years. Englewood Ave., Carolina Ave. and most surrounding streets are well-lit at night; its not unusual to see neighbors walking their dogs long after dark. We (Heidrun and Bill Erwin -- the landlords) live in another part of the house and are home most of the time. So we can respond promptly if you need something.

RELAXING
For relaxing, as noted, you will have exclusive use of the screened porch and access to our spacious back yard. You'll appreciate the quietness of the back yard. It features outdoor seating with BBQ grill, surrounded by trees and other greenery. Depending on the season, you can enjoy the sounds of hoot owls, cicadas, and on summer evenings, crickets and tree frogs.

The Durham-Chapel Hill -Raleigh area (which we call the Triangle) has a thriving music scene. The area's universities, including Duke, the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, North Carolina State and North Carolina Central, present a rich variety of sports and entertainment offerings. The N.C. Museum of Art and the N.C. History Museum, both in Raleigh, are worth a drive on your days off.

BETWEEN THE BEACH AND THE MOUNTAINS

Head west, and immerse yourself in the beauty and peacefulness of the Appalachian mountains in about four and a half hours. For a change-of-pace weekend, drive to Washington, DC or Charleston in about five hours.

SUMMING UP
We've rented our studio apartments for decades to satisfied visiting scholars, med students, other grad students, researchers, dancers and choreographers. We understand the daily challenges you face, especially if you're from somewhere outside the U.S. If you choose our studio at 2041 Englewood, we will work to make your stay as carefree as possible. When it's time for you to move on, we want you to have fond memories of your time in Durham. And we'll do everything in our power to make it so.
