This owner/business will not return the security deposit. Communication is awful. They will be very responsive at first to get your business. Will negotiate the price and "waive" the fees to get you to rent with them. They will call you and text you repeatedly until you send the deposit and rent in full. Then you won't hear from them. You'll have to nag them to send you the check-in information. I had to call multiple times the day of my arrival to get the entrance code that was then delivered to me via text from an unknown number an hour before I arrived (and my arrival was later than the stated check-in time). This unknown number was the "property manager" that later disconnected their number. When I arrived, the place had a broken trash bin, no trash bags, no drinking glasses, dishes in the dishwasher, trash under the kitchen rug, crumbs on the couch, and a pair of shorts under the bed. There are zero amenities provided (i.e. soap, paper towels, cleaning supplies). Additionally, there is only one tiny closet in the entire apartment and no dressers for you to put your belongings. I reported the issues to the owner and property manager on day 1. The property manager was not responsive. The owner two days later stated he was not responsible for providing amenities that were advertised on the listing and that he would send a new trash bin, trash bags, and drinking glasses. None of which arrived during my one month stay. After my stay, despite multiple attempts to contact the owner/business, they ignored all my calls, texts, and emails. The lease states they have 21 days to return the security deposit. On day 21, after I sent a message stating I would escalate this issue, they sent an email stating I would not receive my deposit as it was used to pay a cleaning fee and to replace all the linens. Despite my cleaning fee being waived and no mention of a linen policy. They sent photos of 3 dirt marks on the white bed sheet and hair on the floor (my own and my dog's), which in total would not create a hair ball in your palm, stating this mess cost him $500 to clean and he had to replace all the linens. No other damage was reported. The photos sent were of the sheets how I left them made on the bed -- evident there was no attempt to wash said dirt marks. Per Illinois law, the landlord has to provide an itemized list of deductions with receipts. He refused to provide either. Of note, the original listing said no pets. They made an exception to get me to rent with them and now changed their policy on the listing (as marked by the Oct 29th update). A separate lease was made for my dog that had zero mention of pets on furniture. Nor was that stated to me in writing/over the phone. If that were the case, I would not have rented because my dog is accustomed to that. Out of courtesy, I brought my couch cover to protect their furniture because I have a couch of similar material. There was no report or photo of any furniture damage. The lease states what kind of dog I have, so there are no surprises that this dog sheds. There was as small broom that I used throughout my stay, likely why there is only scant hair pictured. I did not move the bed off the wall to clean, which is one of the pictures of hair he sent. Had a vacuum been provided to help clean, I would have done so before leaving because that's how I was raised. Not sure how I am responsible for cleaning in a place that provides no cleaning supplies to travelers, but here we are.
