When Brett booked Jessica’s rental apartment above her detached garage, neither of them could’ve predicted just how much flavor he’d bring—not just to the kitchen, but to the community.
Many tenants who’ve stayed in the private-entry unit kept to themselves, but Brett was different. From day one, he sought out connection. He reached out to Jessica for local recommendations, eager to explore the city on foot and by bike. When he found out her teenage son biked all over town, he asked if he’d give him a personal tour. The teen was thrilled to show Brett his favorite routes—a moment of pride that stuck with them both.
As a professional chef, Brett naturally connected through food. He became a regular at the local breakfast spot and bakery, where the staff quickly came to know his name and his go-to order: biscuits and gravy with a Mountain Dew (no coffee for Brett!).
But it wasn’t just local businesses he was building relationships with—it was Jessica’s family, too.
Brett offered to teach Jessica's kids some kitchen skills, which turned into a full-blown culinary class. He taught them basic knife techniques and how to prepare roasted chicken, salmon, and prime rib. Dozens of lemons and limes turned into fresh limeade. The kitchen became a place not just for meals, but for laughter, learning, and connection.
The experience culminated in a shared feast with several nearby families—a gathering that brought warmth, gratitude, and community to the table. The kind of gathering that stays with you, long after the last dishes are cleared.
Brett’s presence made a lasting impact. In a space designed for quiet and independence, he fostered connection and community. He didn’t just stay...he engaged, contributed, and made everyone feel a little more at home.
