Finding the right monthly rental can feel exciting, and getting a tenant screening request means you’re moving in the right direction. When a landlord asks you to complete this step, it's a positive sign that you're being considered seriously. Here's what that process looks like and how to navigate it with confidence.
Why you’re being asked to complete a tenant screening
A tenant screening request is one of the first steps toward securing a property you’re interested in. It helps landlords confirm you’re a reliable renter and gives you a chance to demonstrate your credibility. The screening includes a soft credit check (which doesn’t impact your score), as well as background and eviction history checks - all processed securely through TransUnion.
What the screening includes
A soft credit check that won’t affect your score or show on your report
Any criminal history
Any eviction records
Identity verification to keep your information secure
All of this helps landlords make informed decisions while ensuring you’re matched with housing that fits your needs.
Step-by-step: what you’ll do
Receive the request from the landlord via email
Log in or create a KeyCheck account (our trusted screening partner)
Verify your identity and agree to the terms
Pay the $44.99 screening fee
Complete security questions to finalize your submission
The process is quick, straightforward, and results are typically available within 24–48 hours.
What happens after you submit
You’ll get a copy of the screening report in your email, and the landlord who requested it will receive one too. Once your report is complete, it's valid for 30 days. That means you can share it with other landlords if you're applying to more than one property.
