When Francie welcomed her current tenant, Darrin, to her property in the historic Victorian neighborhood of Bellingham, Washington, she had no idea he’d become such a beloved presence so quickly.
Darrin moved into Francie’s main home with his 15-year-old daughter, and rather than simply settle in, he did what few renters do—he brought the neighborhood together.
Not long after moving in, Francie and Darrin co-hosted an old-fashioned ice cream social on the front porch. It became a neighborhood hit, giving local teens and parents a chance to meet and mingle. That front porch would soon take on a life of its own, as Darrin’s casual afternoon banjo sessions began attracting other musicians nearby, which evolved into an impromptu community jam spot.

His spirit of connection doesn’t stop with music. Darrin quickly struck up a friendship with Gerek, Francie’s longtime handyman and local jack-of-all-trades. Respectful of Gerek’s time, Darrin offered to help out with fence building after hours—just to lend a hand. He also polished and reinstalled the house’s brass numbers after a recent paint job, giving the finishing touch a little extra shine.
Francie’s corner of Bellingham has a long-standing sense of charm, but Darrin has brought a new energy to the area. He texts Francie regularly with neighborhood updates—including his recent efforts to rally local residents in response to late-night noise from reckless drivers. His proactive attitude has drawn people together, reinforcing bonds that make a neighborhood feel like home.
"We want him to stay forever," Francie said.

A landlord with a thoughtful touch
Francie’s hosting style is as warm and intentional as the property she offers. Her Bellingham home includes a charming main residence (converted from a vintage grocery store) and a historic carriage barn, all situated in a picturesque, walkable neighborhood. With design that balances vintage charm and comfort, her rental is the kind of space that makes people feel like they belong from day one.
Guests frequently praise Francie in their reviews, describing her as thoughtful, responsive, and welcoming. One renter called her home “a cozy, comfortable space in a lovely neighborhood,” while others note how peaceful the setting is and how much they appreciated her hospitality.
It's clear that Francie doesn’t just rent out space—she curates an experience. That intention is part of what makes the relationship between host and tenant feel more like neighbors, and sometimes, even like friends.
