Good location but NOT a great overall experience.
We stayed at this property for just over 3 months. The location is excellentclose to shops, restaurants, and a farmers marketthe garden with fruit trees, deck, and ocean view is lovely.
Unfortunately, we wouldnt recommend it. The house was not clean on arrival: dirty floors, unclean appliances, and a strong mold odor that persisted despite deep cleaning. Many furnishings and appliances felt unusable, and we had to wash what we did use.
Beds were stained and uncomfortable, and we ended up buying our own pillows. Several electronics didnt work, and fire ants inside the home were biting our children.
Given the rental price, we expected better cleanliness and maintenance. Communication with the owners was tense and unhelpful; their solutions often left us to fix issues ourselves or were unsafe, such as indoor pesticides for ants. The listing should more accurately reflect the homes condition and extra guest fees.
Our experience of these renters was not good. From the beginning they were unpleasant and complained often. It seemed they wanted to be sure to get their security deposit back, which they did. The summer was unusually rainy for the west side and many people noted that there was more of the white mildew that grows on surfaces in Hawaii as a result. They wanted to move in two weeks early even though we explained that the house had been thoroughly deep cleaned before our departure in May, but it would need to be re-cleaned when our cleaner returned from vacation because it had been closed up for two months and in the tropics that requires refreshing. The cleaning was scheduled prior to their original move-in date. They wanted it early anyway and we unfortunately said okay.
Before we left all surfaces had been cleaned using three cleaners. Walls wiped, floors cleaned, windows cleaned, bedding washed, mattress covers were clean. Pillows were in clean covers and most were new. Bedspread was new. Rugs were washed and upholstery shampooed. The oven was cleaned and lined with foil. We covered the furniture. We had two people go in to investigate and clean immediately once they complained. Both said they thought they were overreacting and not used to the Hawaiian climate.
As a courtesy we provide a cleaner once a month for our renters and they said they didn’t appear to do anything in between visits in spite of having two children present.
The fire ants are new to one area of our the yard- we had never encountered them even though Little Red Fire ants are endemic to Hawaii. They reported them saying the kids were bitten while playing outside, not inside as he now says. We immediately called Mason Exterminators who found the nest and said they would spray but the renters then refused the treatment. They did not bring it up again.
The cleaner we provided monthly said the family was very messy and the new bathtub was filthy when she came.
The children knocked a picture off the wall and it broke behind their bed and they didn’t clean it or the broken glass up, blaming it on an earthquake. It was found by the cleaner. We did not believe it was caused by an earthquake because nothing else was disturbed and there had been no unusually strong earthquakes while they were there. He then purchased replacement glass and I repaired it when we returned.
At no time did they say the electronics didn’t work and we found the internet, tv and printer all in working order when we returned. The cd player didn’t work because they unplugged the extension cord and used it elsewhere. He said he was working online so the the internet seemed to be fine. They said the new shark stick vac didn’t work because it was clogged and could we have another vacuum delivered. We said to unclog the tube or use the corded vacuum that was also in the closet. They didn’t seem to know it was there. We found the stick vac still clogged when we returned. It worked fine after unclogging.
They kept comparing our place to a new air b and b they just built in California. I explained this is our home for half the year, not a new vacation rental.
They cleaned the house on move-out but it was but no cleaner than we left it with the exception of the house being closed up . There was no hint of must that we found and both cleaners who came in indicated that they didn’t smell it either after the house was opened up, with the exception of the dresser mentioned.
This is a case of choosing to move in early before it was opened and cleaned and using that to complain about many things. We have had renters for more than 10 years. They all appreciated the home and indicated they would come back if they took another contract on island. Some have returned a second year and expressed appreciation for our home. We made every effort to respond to their concerns immediately. Once they settled in they seemed comfortable so this review seems unfair. We would not recommend them as renters.
