Last-minute cancellation after signed lease be cautious

I had a signed lease with this landlord and paid the required deposit. Less than two weeks before my move-in date, he informed me that the current tenant wanted to extend, and he cancelled my lease. This possibility was never mentioned before signing. While he did return my deposit, the cancellation caused major inconvenience and left me without a place to stay on short notice. He offered an alternative unit, but it was not comparable to what we originally agreed on. Future renters should be aware that confirmed agreements may not be honored.
