BAD rental experience: 2 months no heat & not clean

This rental was a very stressful experience and not suitable for renters, especially traveling healthcare workers. 1. The HVAC system was not functioning during winter. After I reached out multiple times, the landlord eventually admitted it was broken. A small portable heater was provided, but the studio is very small and there was no smoke detector installed, making it unsafe to run overnight or while I was away on 12-hour shifts. This also raised concerns about the safety of my belongings and my cat. 2. When I asked for a rent credit due to the lack of heat, she negotiated in a way that felt unfair and exhausting. The process became so stressful that I ultimately gave in, as it was clear she was not being reasonable. 3. There was a significant cockroach problem at the beginning of my stay. I have pictures of areas under the fridge and couch that were left unclean prior to move in. It was bad enough that I slept in my car the first night before my travel contract even started.

We are sorry this guest remembers her stay so differently than we do. When the HVAC system required repair, we immediately provided a space heater and electric blanket while the repair was being addressed. We also reduced her rent to compensate for the inconvenience, despite her request to pay no rent during that period. Most importantly, when it became clear she was unhappy, we offered her the option to end her stay early with no penalty, a return of her deposit, and no rent due for any unused days. She declined that offer and chose to remain in the apartment for the duration of her stay. As for the pest concerns, we responded promptly by spraying, providing traps and bait and addressing the issue. We make every effort to resolve concerns when they are reported and appreciate guests who work with us toward a solution. At move-out, a portion of the security deposit was withheld to cover documented damages and missing property, consistent with the lease agreement. We recognize that disputes over security deposits can sometimes lead to strong feelings, and prospective guests are welcome to consider that context when reading this review. We believe our actions demonstrate that we responded quickly, communicated openly, offered accommodations, and provided options throughout her stay. Reasonable people may differ on what constitutes fair accommodation, but we maintain providing alternative heat, a rent reduction, and a penalty-free option to leave early reflected a genuine effort to address the situation.
