Unfortunate and unresolved dispute over security deposit dispute

We had a disappointing experience. We signed a lease with a future move-in date and paid a $2,000 refundable security deposit and a $400 cleaning fee. More than 60 days before move-in, we informed the landlords that due to unforeseen family circumstances we could not proceed. We never received keys, took possession, or spent any time in the home. Despite this, the landlords retained the full $2,400 and later claimed an additional $100 under their interpretation of the early termination clause. As a family with three children preparing for relocation, this has been financially and emotionally difficult. We attempted multiple times to resolve the matter and offered compromise solutions, but no agreement was reached. We encourage future renters especially relocating families and professionals to carefully review all lease terms regarding deposits, cancellations, and early termination policies before sending funds.
