Friendly but not clean

Unfortunately, the rental did not live up to the photos and description on the posting. When we arrived, it as if the place hadn't been cleaned and smelt of cigarette smoke. The bed sheets and furniture in the living room were very dirty, the fridge had mold in it, the backyard was covered in dog poop and the fan didn't work in the bedroom. We were booked to stay for ~ 6 weeks with our two dogs and ended up leaving same day for a hotel instead. After our long drive from out of state, we weren't expecting this. Matt and Paula were very nice and responsive when we booked with them. Although they stated they had the rental professionally cleaned it didn't appear so.

Communication before arrival was pleasant, and we worked hard to accommodate several requests, including approving a second dog (our standard policy allows only one pet), waiving our usual pet fee, and expediting the booking without completing our standard reference check at the tenants' request. Upon arrival, the tenants informed us they were unhappy with the condition of the property. We immediately apologized, agreed to terminate the lease, same day before they spent a single night in the home. We never charged a deposit so there was nothing to refund, but we would have 100% issued a refund. While we regret that the property did not meet expectations upon arrival, we were surprised to receive a negative review after resolving the situation promptly and at no cost to the tenants. Future hosts may wish to follow their standard screening and booking procedures and ensure expectations are aligned prior to move-in.
