Broke an executed lease 7 days before move in

We currently have a signed lease for this property, starting August 27, 2026 though May 30, 2027. Just 7 days before move-in, the landlord asked for an extra $300 beyond what the lease's prorated rent terms specified and had been paid in advance. She did not respond when we asked for a breakdown of the additional costs or offered to talk it through. That night, while we were asleep, she sent a string of texts and calls that escalated on their own past midnight, ending with her breaking the lease. Even after this, having her refund the prorated August rent was challenging. Losing housing days before a cross-country move has left us scrambling for a short-term place while we search for something new. If you're considering renting here, get everything in writing and be prepared for last-minute changes even after signing.
